Command & Conquer Remastered on MacBook Pro

Right now, the C&C Remastered Edition is only available for Windows. So I’m running MacOS (2017 with 4 Thunderbolt) which made me think about a different solution: WindowsToGo and Boot Camp.

Sorted out I’ve got only 100GB free space on my MacBook so installing Windows 10 besides MacOS was not an option.

To prepare for the installation you’ll need:

  • A Windows Computer
  • USB keyboard and mouse
  • USB hub
  • external HDD 250GB and USB2.0 is okay
  • Windows License Code

First step is to download the Windows ISO File with the Windows Computer and use the free tool Rufus to turn your external HDD into a bootable WindowsToGo Drive. Make sure your external HDD has at least USB2.0 so it’s not tooooo damn slow. SSD and/or USB3.x makes the whole thing much faster.

Settings for Rufus: Check the “show USB drives” and select Windows Bootable, Windows to go. Leave the rest as it’s defaults.

After creating the bootable disk make sure you download the Boot Camp drivers to another USB device. You’ll need it later. Open Boot Camp Assistant in MacOS (find it in Applications, Utilities) and use the top menu to download the Windows Support Software. Save it to the USB drive.

Connect the WindowsToGo drive, restart your MacBook holding down the “Option” key and wait for Boot Camp to select the Windows Disk for start.

Not the Windows setup starts. Note that it will restart after a while, you need to hold down the “Option” key again then. If you miss the moment, no worries, just restart again holding it down, the setup resumes.

At this point the Windows setup dialogue begins and your keyboard/touchpad might refuse to function. So prepare your external devices. The USB hub could help to manage all the devices.

After the Windows setup has finished, the system restarts again. You may guess it? Hold the “Option” key and select the Windows disk.

Once the setup has been finished install the Boot Camp Windows Driver you’ve saved to your USB drive. After that, restart again and your system is finished.

You can now activate your Windows with a valid key, download Origin or Steam or install C&C by other media and enjoy playing.

Depending you the external disk, the system and the game takes some time to start. I’m happy with a 320GB WD external disk, C&C is running without any lags.

My MacBook 2017:

  • 3,1 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5
  • 16 GB 2133 MHz LPDDR3
  • Intel Iris Plus Graphics 650 1536 MB
